Sunday Facts – Bond Edition

November 19, 2006

We saw Casino Royale today.

We sat four rows behind the My Quiet Life crew.

It took every bit of restraint I could muster to not throw popcorn at them (they didn’t notice us until we walked up to them after the movie).

Amanda and I have very different opinions about Daniel Craig as 007.

Without giving anything away, the shower scene made me fall totally and completely in love (in lust?) with Craig’s Bond.

Daniel Craig fills out a polo with khakis and a tuxedo with a certain badassness not seen in Bondland since Sean Connery. (Editor’s note: Pierce and Roger both looked debonaire in their tuxes, but Sean and Daniel are grittily handsome. Is grittily a word?) (There’s no comment on Timothy Dalton because I haven’t yet admitted to myself that he was a real Bond.) (Oh, and I haven’t seen On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, so I can’t say anything about George Lazenby.) (That’s the last of the parentheses, promise.)

Daniel Craig is the hotness.

At $13.50 for the two of us to take in a matinee, I believe we’ll be going again.

I haven’t seen a movie more than once in the theaters since The Usual Suspects.

Daniel Craig is smoking in his little swimsuit.

Eva Green is the the new Helena Bonham Carter.

I don’t think the above is actually a fact.

Daniel Craig is painfully sexy.

Ok, so maybe they’re not all fact facts, but they’re real enough to me.

Has anyone else seen Casino Royale yet? What did you think? I’m not going to go into a huge discussion about it if there aren’t any other Bondophiles (myself being a Bondophile-in-training) out there.

This one has potential to be up there with The Spy Who Loved Me on my favorites list.

Edited to add: As I’m rereading this post and listening to my Bond playlist (want a copy? It’s the City of Prague Orchestra doing the themes from Dr. No through Licence to Kill, and then the other themes available on iTunes by the original artists), I realized that if this keeps up, I’m going to be like the Star Wars fanatics, only about 007.

Thing is, it’s something that CB and I do together – watching the movies, dismantling the plot points, discussing the differences in the actors, looking up which CSI episode a supporting cast member was in (check it out if you don’t believe me….everybody in Hollywood’s been in at least one CSI episode), and forever changing our favorite Bond, Bond girl, bad guy, location….and then discussing why.

And you know what? I love it. And I’ll take being a dork anyday when my dorkdom is defined by spending time with el hubbo and doing something we both really like.

Edited to add II – I’ve found a kindred spirit.

  1. Well, it’s absolutely true that I have been listening to a lot of Star Wars original scores lately. I can understand your enjoyment.

  3. I haven’t seen it but it’s on our must see list (and your review really makes me want to!)

Being dorks together is one of the awesome perqs of marriage.

Alan and I look forward to watching Battlestar Galactica together on Friday nights…need I say more.

  4. I was forced at gunpoint to go see Santa Clause 3, instead.

    Damn kids.

  5. I loved it. It’s the best Bond in years, and yes, the shower scene was the hotness. Seriously.

I’ve never found Bond so realistically sexually appealing–not even when Connery played it.

  6. The shower scene. I had that feeling like if I didn’t find that man right NOW and make him fall in love with me then I would just shrivel up and die. He was so bare, so human.

I felt the same way about Johnny Depp in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. And Colin Firth in Love Actually.

  7. Love Actually! It’s Love Actuallly Season!

(I always watch it the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.)

I think the sexiest men are the ones who are open, caring and strong. That shower scene was just….uhhhhh

  8. Well here you go…007 fashion! ;)

  9. HOLY CRAP! Did you see the prices on that stuff? I was all ready to buy one of the hoodies….then was knocked out of my chair by the $295 price tag.

  10. No one will ever be as hot as Pierce. Talk about SA.

And let’s not forget Thomas Crown…mmmmmm.

PS – I watched Love Actually with my man last Wednesday night. It MUST be the season.

  11. I’ve not seen the new Bond yet…I may try this weekend, but I bet a lot of other people have the same idea.

I went through a phase of intense fascination with Bond where I saw most of the films and read a good number of the books in a short period of time. The books are quite interesting.

  12. Jag, I’m so glad you brought up the shower scene. I can’t believe I left it out of my own review.

That scene was intensely powerful and moving. I don’t think I’ve sniffed “moving” in a Bond film except for a hint of it in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. OHMSS is, by the way, worth watching despite Lazenby. The story is one of the better Bond scripts, IMO.

If you ask me, Eva Green is stunning because she isn’t a typical Bond girl. Sure, she’s beautiful, but not in an overdone way. She’s also really an equal to Bond, something often promised but rarely achieved in recent Bond movies.

I’ll likely be seeing Royale again, too. I haven’t pulled a twofer in a long time.

  13. man, you guys are making me want to leave work and see this movie. I haven’t been remotely excited about seeing a Bond film in years. I’m old enough to have read the books when they first came out, and I still consider Sean C. to be the true J. Bond.

But, I loved the new Bond in Layer Cake, so I am willing to give him a chance. I’m REALLY curious about this shower scene!
