reality check

May 27, 2007

Well, so much for a nice relaxing weekend.

Our next door neighbor removed a random piece of his backyard fence that allows people access from the alley to our driveway (there’s a lien on the driveway, but we both have a parking area). This piece of fence was removed for no good reason. Just poof! One day it was gone. My car has been broken into numerous times since it was taken away, but I can deal with that.

Today we discovered that someone had actually come through his yard, gone into our garage, and stole two pressure washers. We can’t make the guy replace the fence, but so much for being neighborly and sharing the driveway like normal people. Tomorrow we’re going to install privacy fencing that will split the parking area down the middle.

Not that we could find the guy anyway – this house has been up for sale for over a year, he’s asking a ridiculous price even though it’s falling down. The only current tenant is a stray cat.

Now I’m waiting on Metro to call me back and take my theft report. Joy of joys.

ETA – I titled this reality check, which is ironic because I just had one.  Flipping through channels, we came across one of the numerous war movies on today.  Yeah, we just got robbed and our home was violated, but nobody was hurt and we can fix this.  Thinking of all those young guys that had to live their lives with the visions of war forever in their heads put my petty worries in perspective.

Not that I’m not still pissed, because I am, but I feel better about it.

  1. Oh, man. That completely sucks. I’m so sorry for you guys.

(At least a tree didn’t fall on the house. Then again, April doesn’t live there.)

  3. My Ipod got stolen out of my car a few weeks ago (I was not in the habit of leaving it in the car…freak thing it got left in there) and my feelings are still hurt over that. Everytime I see that commercial for Itunes with the cartoon thing with the people dancing, it makes my stomach turn, but, like you say, in the grand scheme, there’s worse things.

  4. Holy shit. That royally fucking sucks, man.

  5. Damn! That sucks. I really hate that people feel entitled to take other people’s shit.

  6. I like how you view things. Bad news is still bad news, but perspective can help wonders.

  7. That burns – We hosted a big party for single parents years ago when the Mrs. & I were active in Single Parent Ministry and a punk kid stole money from the purses. I was pretty upset as $40 for any single mom was lot of money with child care, rent, expenses, etc. but my church was generous in replacing hose funds. At the same time, my 35 mm camera was lifted out of my car; I call one of the elders and asked if it was theologically correct to pray for that person to have massive explosive diarrhea until my camera was returned. The Good Book was not specific about things like that, but nonetheless, two days later, I was surprised to find that the camera was returned intact in my car. Forgiveness (and on target prayers!) helps ease the pain. Your perspective is to be commended!

  8. Well that just sucks. We’re replacing our fence soon and I’m already nervous about the time period we’re “in-between” as the new posts have to sit.
