cars. not the movie.
September 12, 2007For the first time in the history of my drivers license, I’m looking at cars instead of trucks or SUVs. I’m afraid that I’ll end up concentrating on stupid things and miss something imperative. I know for sure I’ll be honing in on power windows and locks – oh, it will be blissful. I’ve had kids get in the Jeep and ask how to roll down the window. These people have never seen a manual crank before. Talk about a generation gap.
I do the same thing with the last couple tvs and vcrs we’ve purchased – I got all caught up in the look of the thing and totally ignored the fact that the remote doesn’t have a last channel or recall button. And you know channel surfing cannot be done properly without that.
It won’t be hard to upgrade from my basic Wrangler, feature-wise. I’d hang off the Natchez Trace bridge my toenails just to have a delay on the windshield wipers and be able to hear the radio when driving over thirty five. It’d also be nice to get more than four days’ commute out of a tank of gas.
This whole car thing is new to me though. Are hatchbacks or trunks better? How many cupholders does a family need? I currently have one – two will be a luxury. What am I missing?

I prefer the hatchback. I’m always moving lots of junk…luggage, hockey bag, groceries, etc. It’s also handy when running to home depot, I can easily move a dozen landscaping timbers in my tiny car.
You need 4 drink holders.
You need a way to hook up my mp3 player or iPod without a stupid FM transmitter…no wait, that’s me.
I’m rockin’ 35 mpg.
I’m all about a trunk…but I think thats an aesthetic thing…hatchbacks take me straight back to my moms gremlin.
Two drink holders in the front are lovely…I wouldn’t consider the back not having them a deal-breaker if the rest of the car fits ya.
I’m with S&F on the mp3 input jack..although if it isn’t stock you can always put in a new cd player that has one.
I always insisted on a manual, always…but then I got stuck with this automatic and I kind of really like it…shhhhh, don’t tell anyone
We have a sedan Taurus and a station wagon Taurus. I drive the sedan and I really like having the enclosed trunk for my general trips around town. The hatch back, fold down seat feature in the station wagon is great for hauling stuff (as long as the kids aren’t in the car!) I like that there are cup holders in the back seat (of my car) and that there are back seat air vents, as well (that was really helpful a few weeks ago during our extreme heat!) My car has a cd-changer with room for six CDs which I really like, some music for me, some music for the kids. My husband drives the station wagon and it only has a tape player. He has an iPod and uses a tape converter. He’s had FM transmitters before and honestly the tape converter works better. That might be an option if you’re not getting a newer model that has an mp3 input jack.
I’ve entered SUV world, so I don’t have anything to add, but wanted to second the ipod hookup – I have the FM transmitter, and it drives me crazy! There’s always interference – I wish I had just paid the $250 to get the input jack.
hi – i was wondering where the nashville bloggers were. i’ve been blogging in a vacuum… so ummmm, hello… nice to meet you. your blog is cool.
as for the car thing. you’re on your own pal.
I’m a trunk girl, myself. Or at least get one of those roll up shade-like things for a hatch back to cover up your stuff… Although friends just got a Mazda station wagon that I’m really digging right now.
How sad is that last sentence?
