I was looking for Weird Al’s Polka Your Eyes Out, but I guess he didn’t release a video for it, so I looked for his You Don’t Love Me Anymore, but while that’s in my top 3 Weird Al songs, it’s not exactly feel goodish. Still, the video for that obviously made me think of Extreme, which made me remember this rad song:

People say that doing crossword puzzles and sudoku and whatnot help improve the quality of your grey matter. With that in mind, don’t judge me.

My game is Back to Bacon: Redux. Whenever I want to look up anyone or anything involving a movie or tv show, I go to the imdb.com and try to get to that person or thing by starting with something that’s linked on the home page.

So tonight I’m reading a child stars People special and see an article about Jenny Lewis, who was in The Wizard with Fred Savage. I’m looking at this picture of her, thinking “damn, that chick looks really familiar” and then think that she’s the chick from The Goonies (the non-Martha Plimpton one).

Long story short, CB was sitting here and we were talking through the connections. If the new Indiana Jones was still in the top five box office flicks, I could get to The Goonies by going to that then Harrison Ford/Temple of Doom/Short Round/Goonies. If Love Guru was still up there it would be Mike Myers/Goldmember/Fred Savage/Wizard. I got to it by going through Step Brothers/Will Ferrell/Elf/Jon Favreau/Rudy/Sean Astin/Goonies.

The Sean Astin connection mention naturally had me spouting “you know that he’s Patty Duke and John Astin’s son, right?”

And he said, I kid you not, “Who’s Patty Duke?”

And then I keeled over and died.

Mind you, I did a lot of babysitting in the late 80s and early 90s and watched a LOT of Nick at Nite after the kids were in bed and I was waiting for the parents to get home. I can sing the Patty Duke theme song on command. But that aside, didn’t everybody watch her as Helen Keller in school? Who doesn’t know who Patty Duke is?

I said, “She’s like Donna Reed.”

He said, “Who’s Donna Reed?”

And then I died again, rolled over in my grave, and exploded.

I’ll spare you the discussion we had about John Astin.

Granted, he didn’t grow up in the states, but he knows so much more than I do about American history (and just about everything else) that I can’t imagine him not knowing about these icons of television history.

I’m not sure how I ended up married to a man that doesn’t know that cousins can be two of a kind.

Most effective if watched just before bed.

Some friends came over tonight, and we sat out on the front porch chatting while the breeze from the predicted overnight storms blew over us. Then something happened and it all turned still. There are no breezes to speak of, and even opening the front door causes us to be surrounded by instant humidity. Ugh.

So I’m rewatching the fourth season of Lost, and there’s a lot of stuff that makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE having seen the ending. Locke saying “I don’t know what they look like” in There’s No Place Like Home is one of my favorite moments of the show. V v funny.

Crap, it’s hot.

ETA Keamy looks a whole lot like a guy I grew up with. It’s hard to see him as a bad guy.

Oh, and we went to the Home Depot that just opened at Gallatin Rd and Briley and it was so clean and beautiful I want to move in and smell the lumber and newness all day long. I could be like Natalie Portman in Where the Heart Is and live in the little sunroom they have set up instead of the camping section at Wal Mart.

There’s been a ton going on, but I guess that by the time I compose a post about it in my head, I realize it’s too boring to share. Or something happens that wouldn’t be all that boring, but before I get around to typing it up, I’m so sick of talking about it I just leave it on the verbal airwaves.

So rather than tell you all about our hotel disasters, the blisters I got from being a dumbass and walking around Manhattan in my heels, or how our flight home got cancelled, I’ll share my favorite pictures from our trip to New York last week.

We took a lot of pictures of American flags. Don’t know if we were feeling especially patriotic, being in the city for the first time since 9/11, or if the contrast between fabric and concrete was touching, or what.

Too bad I didn’t watch the episode until afterwards, but when our flight home was canceled, we ended up staying at the LaGuardia Airport Hotel, which is where Bret and Jemaine played a gig in Flight of the Conchords. I was watching it, and about wet myself and thought “I recognize those curtains!” We spent a lot of time in that same bar. Today I mentioned that to CB, and he was all “oh yeah, they had a thing about it posted in the lobby, but I didn’t think you knew who they were”. Damnit. Probably better for him anyway, because I likely would have spent an already exhausting evening freaking out.

There’s a Brian we grew up with, and even after knowing him for 15 years, every time I write his name I have to ask Jill if he spells with with an I or with a Y.  Earlier this week, some of us went through old photo albums and scanned a bunch of pictures from high school to put on myspace and then when tagging them I realized that the hardest thing to remember was which Rebecca spelled it with a -kah and which used -cca.   I know that we used to have to worry about Catherine with a K sometimes, but other than that, people in our generation spelled names relatively normally.

I look at names all day at work.  Now there’s Brittney, Britney, Brittanee, and Britaney.  There’s Madison, Maddyson, and Madesun.  There’s Mikayla, Makailah, and Mikayla.  Jackson, Jaxson, and Jaxon.  What is going on?  Mass hysteria.

In other news, I’ve been putting two packets of Equal in my coffee at work all week, trying to cut back on sugar.  Since we don’t keep that crap at home, I’m drinking coffee with bona fide sugar in it, and it’s SO much better.

Also, my neighbors have company this week and have been hanging out on their porch, so they’ve got all these extra canvas chairs out there, and sitting out on my porch in the morning quiet and seeing all those chairs makes me feel kind of like I’m camping.  It’s a nice feeling.

There’s really no point to any of this.  I just keep typing.  I guess I’ll go make a shopping list.
